NEW ENGLAND COLLECTION OF CHILDREN'S MATERIALS New England Authors of the Year
This collection is compiled of both current and older literature, which illustrates and interprets the New England area and its peoples to children and young adults in the present and past. This collection is designed to: 1) preserve older materials written for children of all ages which reflect attitudes, and mores of past generations of New Englanders; 2) collect new materials which reflect attitudes and mores of present generations of New Englanders within the context of New England; 3) collect the literary and artistic contributions of children's authors and illustrators working within New England with New England as a particular topic or theme of their work; 4) provide a browsing and, whenever possible, a circulating collection where children and their parents and educators may discover materials directly relating to the human and natural environment of New England. Some emphasis may be given to works from or about Massachusetts. Pure factual books will be collected only when they serve to answer questions of special interest to children or educate them on issues of current interest relating to the area. This collection makes no effort to collect all the works of any one author or illustrator past or present, or all materials relating to New England or Massachusetts for children. Books about natural history or the environment may not specifically be written about New England but may still directly interpret the natural history of the area at a child's level. This collection is to consist of books only, other materials being added to the regular collection as needed, and will be maintained by funds from the Youth Services budget. In order to preserve older materials, items that are out of print when added to the collection will not circulate. The New England Collection may include titles also purchased for the regular collection.
