How to check out a free library eBook to your Kindle:
- Visit the Overdrive website by navigating to www.burlingtonpubliclibrary.org. Drop down the menu under the green button ‘Books & More’, and click ‘Downloadable Books.’
- Click on ‘My Digital Account’ and sign into Overdrive with your library card number. Signing in first thing assures that you see the books available only to Burlington cardholders in addition to the books available to all MVLC patrons.
- Click on ‘Home’ to get back to the Overdrive Catalog. Browse the eBooks for a title you are interested in. If the book you want has a status of ‘add to bookbag,’ it means that it is available for immediate download. Once a title is in your bookbag, you have 30 minutes to check it out. You may ‘continue browsing,’ or ‘proceed to check out’.
If a record’s status is ‘place a hold,’ it is currently being used by another patron and you will be notified when it becomes available for checkout. You may also click on ‘add to wish list.’ This creates a personal list of books you may want to read in the future. - When you are through selecting books, open your Bookbag, proceed to Checkout, select a lending period and check out. Then click the ‘Get for Kindle’ button. This opens the Amazon.com website.
- Click the ‘Get Library Book’ button You may be required to sign in with your Amazon.com account if you are not already logged in. If you don’t have an Amazon account, you can create one from this page.
- Select the Kindle device or Kindle reading app where you want the book to be delivered. Click the ‘Continue’ button and you will now see a thank you message stating that your public library book has been delivered.
- An active Wi-Fi connection is required for wireless delivery to a Kindle device. Using a WiFi connection, sync your device or app to download the book
- If your Kindle is not Wi-Fi capable or you do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, you can download via USB drive (see below).
A really great YouTube video can be found at http://youtube/mgKbyhuqxuU or by searching the phrase “Library Ebooks for Amazon Kindle” at the YouTube website.
To download via USB Drive:
- Proceed as above.
- After you select the device for download, click on the ‘Download Now’ button. A box should pop up asking if you want to open or save the file. Select ‘Save File.’ You may also check the box labeled ‘Do this automatically for files like this from now on’ so that, in the future, the files will be saved by default. The eBook should now be visible in the default downloads location on your computer, preferably the Desktop. If you are having trouble finding your book, search ‘all files and folders’ of your computer for ‘.azw.’
- Attach your Kindle to your computer via USB. A box should pop up showing various folders on your Kindle. (If the folders don’t appear, double click the Kindle icon in ‘My Computer’ to make them appear.) Grab the book icon and drag it into the ‘documents’ folder of your Kindle. The book should now be on your Kindle.
