Thursday Morning "Book Talk"

Second and Fourth Thursdays of the month
10:30 - 11:30 a.m., year-round

Coffee and conversation for readers

Assistant Director Susanne Sullivan will talk about some of the Library's newest books -- and then hopes to hear about what you've been reading!  Book lovers are always interested in what others have enjoyed, and most of us delight in spreading the word about favorite books and authors.

There is no required reading and no obligation to speak.  You may simply listen if you like.  Let us introduce you to books you might never have discovered on your own, and to authors we hope you'll love.

"The Last Wednesday Book Group"

Our next read:

Infidel
by Ayaan Hirsi Ali

infidel

The controversial memoir of a Somali woman who was raised a devout Muslim but later become an active critic of Islam, an advocate for women's rights and a leader in the campaign to reform Islam. Her willingness to speak out and her criticism of the Muslim faith have made her a target of death threats by Islamic extremists.

Slaughterhouse-five

By Kurt Vonnegut

slaughter

A comic science fiction tale that was hugely popular during the 1960’s.  It tells the story of young Billy Pilgrim and his adventures, but it is also a powerful fictional memoir of the author’s experiences during the Allied fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany.

"Slaughterhouse Five" is sad, surreal, whimsical, brutal, and oddly gentle. As an interesting companion text, try "The Things They Carried," Tim O'Brien's excellent book about the Vietnam War.
